Tiles have been used for thousands of years, providing decoration and protection to all manner of surfaces.
Archaeologists have found pieces of tile along the River Nile dating back up to 18,000 years.
Once viewed as the preserve of the rich, tiles are now affordable and come in thousands of colours and styles. Usually square or rectangular, today's tiles are high quality products and generally range in size from 1cm square to 1m square.
There are various types of tile, all with slightly different properties:
- Glazed ceramic: Often used for walls in bathrooms and kitchens. They can also be used as floor tiles but should not be used outside.
- Unglazed ceramic: Great for utility rooms, bathrooms and commercial settings as they are wear, stain and frost resistant.
- Porcelain: Usually used as floor tiles. Hardwearing and attractive, they can be used both inside and out.
- Quarry: A natural clay product that is both hardwearing and non-slip, which makes it perfect for flooring.
- Terracotta: Again, made from natural clay but with a warm feel that can bring a room to life. Generally only used indoors.
- Mosaic: Perfect for decoration and usually sold in sheets as small pieces of ceramic tile or glass.
- Natural stone: Perfect for floors and walls, these products can vary in thickness and durability.
